Summary  & Application:

I know most of you listening have heard of the concept of setting SMART goals. Goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timebound. I 100% agree with setting SMART goals but sometimes we struggle to set the RIGHT smart goal. Too often we can choose a band-aid goal when what we need is a corrective surgery goal. In other words, why set a smart goal for how to use crutches so you can limp into the next business quarter when you can set a smart goal for corrective surgery that can have you running into the next business quarter.

So let’s talk about how to START or S-T-A-R-T so you can ensure that you are setting the right SMART goals.

In the acronym START the

S - Symptoms that you’re currently experiencing

T - True aim  or what you really want

A - Assess  the root causes of symptoms and gaps

R - Retain, Remove, Resolve  in order to define a strategy

T Tackle a goal…a smart goal

By first taking time to reflect on the Symptoms and your True Aim, then Assessing the gaps and root causes for those gaps, work to Retain, remove, resolve work within the strategy and then get in the right stance to tackle a goal…a SMART goal.
